26th July 2006 NO SHODDY DOGGIE FOR TIME BEINGLast season we found at very short notice that our club was unable to return to the Station Hotel at Dewsbury, where our club had been housed successfully for several years. Over the following months we tried desperately to find a new suitable venue moving between several temporary homes none of which could guarantee us the use of the room provided on a committed regular basis. After closing the Spring Season at the Shoulder of Mutton, Batley we once again find ourselves homeless and for the time being the Shoddy Doggie will not be running. Thank you to members and friends for all your much appreciated support throughout the (at times) difficult moves. Please keep checking our website for updates. Best wishes from Anne and Lionel PS We hope to see you about at festivals and other venues when we can catch up with all the news 28th March 2006 Shoddy Doggie returns home!As alterations are taking place at the Station Hotel which make it impossible for us to hold our club there for the time being, the club is returning to the Old Shoulder of Mutton at Batley Carr for the current season. The Old Shoulder of Mutton is situated on the Halifax Road (A638) between Dewsbury Town Centre and the District Hospital (see map). This Saturday’s guest will be John Birkby, well known both as a solo performer and as part of Aikens Drum, followed on April 22nd by the excellent singer and guitarist, Alistair Russell who you may remember was also a member of Battlefield Band for some time. To end the season on a high note we have father and son Graham and Sam Pirt. Graham is well known as a solo performer and also as part of Cockersdale and his son is a superb musician who is rapidly becoming as well known as his dad. We hope to see you this Saturday 1st April at our new venue. Kind regards Lionel and Anne Please refer back to this website for news updates and future events! 19th March 2006 Kennel crisis in Dewsbury! We have recently discovered that our landlord, Chris, who appeared to be doing a good job, has apparently been evicted from our home at the Station Hotel in Dewsbury. The new landlord is very friendly and seems positive about the club remaining at the Station. Unfortunately our club room is full of the previous landlord's furniture and other worldly goods which cannot be touched. Consequently the club will be temporarily closed until this issue (and others) are resolved. As a result of this unfortunate turn of events we regret to inform our members that there will be no singers' and musicians' night on March 25th. Please refer back to this website for news updates and future events!
14th February 2006 Lancaster Maritime FestivalFor further information about the latest Lancaster Maritime Festival please visit the website at the following link www.shanty.co.uk. 18th January 2006 Item for club spotlightShoddy Doggie at the Station. Since our Summer break the Shoddy has been 'on tour' in Batley, for the most part pleasantly housed in the studio upstairs at St Mary's Social Club where we have been made most welcome. Now, however, following 'normalisation' of business at the Station Hotel in Dewsbury we have made the very difficult decision to return there starting with the visit of Strawhead. In order to help friends and fellow folkies to keep track of developments we now have a professionally produced club website www.shoddydoggie.co.uk. This will enable us to post details of events and activities that take place after copy dates and generally keep folk up to date. If in doubt give us a ring as usual. We will continue to book nationally known guests about once a fortnight. Remember singers' and musicians' nights are free. Best wishes Lionel and Anne.
